The Miriam Hospital Magnet Award

The Miriam Hospital Receives Seventh Consecutive Magnet Designation

The Miriam once again earned Magnet designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. It was the seventh consecutive time the hospital achieved the prestigious recognition—joining only three other hospitals worldwide to do so.

The honor is considered the gold standard for nursing excellence and provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark for measuring quality of care. Only hospitals that meet rigorous standards for high-quality nursing excellence can achieve Magnet recognition, the highest national honor for professional nursing practice.

Innovative Procedure Gives Bruce
a ‘New Lease on Life’

Retired auto repair shop owner Bruce Balemian could fix any car problem he encountered. But when a serious health issue threatened his mobility and quality of life, Bruce needed someone else in the driver’s seat to get back on the road to wellness.

“My last few years working, I started developing pain in my back and both legs on long walks,” Bruce recounts. “As time went on the pain became unbearable even on short walks; it would come on after just 50 to 75 feet, and I would have to stop and sit for 15 minutes then continue.”

The Miriam Hospital Renovation Project

The Miriam Hospital Renovation Project
Set to Begin Spring 2025

This spring, The Miriam will embark on an ambitious and long overdue “remove and replace” construction project that will include the demolition of the hospital’s oldest structure on campus and the building of a brand-new, efficient facility in its place. Once completed, the new building will be home to an expanded emergency department and modernized inpatient units. Through these critical upgrades, The Miriam Hospital aims to provide better care, improve patient outcomes, and meet the growing needs of our community.

Life's Essential 8:
Improve Your Heart Health and More

A Brown University Health Blog by Karen Aspry, MD

For decades, the American Heart Association was focused on reducing the risk factors for preventable cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) first established in the 1960s. However, in 2010, it introduced a new framework or construct, called “cardiovascular health” (CVH), aimed at not just reducing CVD risk factors, but optimizing CVH in ourselves, our families, and the population through risk factor control and healthy behaviors.
