Health Information Exchange

An electronic health information exchange (HIE) enables patients, health care providers, health plans and managed care organizations, and authorized public health agencies to securely access and share important medical information as needed for treatment, payment, and health care operations.

Using an HIE helps enhance the quality, safety, and efficiency of care and may also lower overall health care costs. The use of electronic health information exchanges is governed by federal law.
