Honoring Alan Hassenfeld – A Legacy of Philanthropy

Alan Hassenfeld“You could say The Miriam Hospital is in my blood. My grandparents, Henry and Marian Hassenfeld, were part of The Miriam’s founding. My parents continued their tradition of supporting this hospital, and my brother and I have followed in their footsteps. And as I’ve gotten older, I’ve benefited from having The Miriam’s amazing doctors right down the street.

I am passionate about The Miriam for more reasons than just my own family. I support The Miriam Hospital because it cares for everybody in our community. What started out as a community, Jewish hospital, has grown into an academic medical center that is responsive to the changing world of medicine and our diverse neighborhoods. The Miriam has been here for three, in some cases four generations of patients and families—and has the vision and visionaries to be here for countless more.

While so many of us have been part of the hospital’s history, what makes The Miriam Hospital Centennial Campaign special is that every grateful patient, every grateful family, has an opportunity to be part of its future. As we celebrate The Miriam Hospital’s Centennial, my hope for its future is that it continues to provide exceptional care and be the warmest, most caring hospital, not only in Rhode Island, but in America. And that through The Centennial Campaign, we will ensure that The Miriam’s care continues to be excellent for generations to come.”

— Alan Hassenfeld, Life Trustee, The Miriam Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and The Centennial Campaign Honorary Co-Chair

Dear Supporters and Friends of The Miriam Hospital,

It is with deep sorrow that I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of our dear friend and board member, Alan Hassenfeld.

Alan was so much more than a brilliant and accomplished individual—he was a cherished friend to many of us. With his unmatched warmth, wit, and generosity of spirit, Alan brought light to every room he entered. He was admired not only for his quick humor and personal kindness but for the unmistakable sparkle he carried into every interaction.

While Alan’s achievements and his deep commitment to the community are widely known, those of us privileged to work with him at The Miriam Hospital experienced his impact on a more personal level. As Honorary Chair of our Centennial campaign, Alan was an unwavering champion for our mission. He believed wholeheartedly that the hospital was worthy of bold goals and he challenged us—always gently, always thoughtfully—to aim higher and dream bigger. He gave generously of his time, offering strategic insight, heartfelt advocacy, and constant encouragement. Tireless and deeply invested, he never wavered in his support.

Alan’s dedication to The Miriam was rooted in a proud family legacy—one he carried with grace, humility, and a profound sense of purpose. In every conversation, he reminded us why our work matters and inspired us to envision what more we could achieve together.

Alan will be missed deeply—as a board member, a leader, a creative force, and most of all, a friend. His presence made a lasting impact, and his legacy will continue to shape our work for many years to come.

With heartfelt gratitude and sadness,

Maria Ducharme, DNP, RN, President, The Miriam Hospital and Chief Quality Executive, Brown University Health
