Diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in her late 40s, Lora Fox Gamble had few options for treatment until Dr. Don Dizon of the Lifespan Cancer Institute identified her as a candidate for a radical application of chemotherapy offered locally only at Rhode Island Hospital. Imaging for lingering back pain unexpectedly revealed a rare, aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma for 38-year-old Helena Dos Santos, who only months later would be the recipient of the second stem cell transplant performed at the Lifespan Cancer Institute and is doing great today! Hasbro Children’s Hospital’s newest employee, a four-and-a-half-month-old Portuguese Water Dog named Cora, is in the midst of her yearlong training to become the hospital’s first, full-time, in-residence therapy dog.
